Comparative Study Associated with Clinical Aspect of Reproductive-Endocrine Pattern between Top Women Athletes and the Average Korean Women

Abstract
The reproductive-endocrine patterns of 176 top Korean women athletes land a total of 293 average Korean Women (109 phy. edu. major students, 120 non phy. edu. major students, 64 married women) were studied.
The study was conducted by examining the following causes; the interval of the menstruation, the amount and duration of menstruation, physical condition during menstruation, and elements thought to play a part in these physical changes such as
are,
weight, height, blood type, date of menarche, amount of daily exercise, history of disease, and operations.
@ES The following conclusions were derived from this study.
@EN 1. The average age for the top women athletes is 19.1¡¾3.1 land for the 109 phy. ed. majors, 120 non phy. ed. majors and 64 married women is 20.1¡¾1.6, 20.5¡¾1.8, 30.9¡¾5.0 respectively.
2. The average weight and height of the women athletes is 58.3¡¾9.0Kg, 165.5¡¾14.2cm. The average weight and height for the phy. ed. majors, non phy ed majors and married women is 50.0¡¾4.6kg, 161.6¡¾3.8cm, 51.1¡¾4.3kg, 159.4¡¾4.8cm, 53.3¡¾6.9kg,
158.5¡¾4.8cm respectively.
3. The percentage of ABO blood type is as follows: for the women athletes type A is 37.3%, type O is 29.8%, type Bis 25.5%, type AB is 7.5%. For the average women, type A is 38.0%, type B is 29.3%, type O is 26.9% and type AB is 5.8%.
4. The age of menarche for the women athletes in 15.1¡¾6.3.For the phy. ed. majors, non majors, and married women is 14.6¡¾1.1, 13.4¡¾2.6, 14.6¡¾3.1, respectively. The women athletes age of menarche is slightly later compared to average women.
And
the
age of menarche for a Korean girl in 1977 was 15.5~15.9, age of menarche for foreign women athlete in 1973~1980 was 13.3.
Conclusively, the age of menarche for top Korean women athletes is earlier than the former and later than the latter. Furthermore, the age of start of physical training for top women athletes and the generaly phy. ed. majros is 12.5¡¾2.5and
13.3¡¾4.0,
respectively.
5. Top women athletes spend 5.6¡¾1.2 hrs in physical training whereas the general phy. ed. majors spend 4.2¡¾1.1 hrs. The non phy. ed. majors spend 1 1.5¡¾3.9 hrs to study and work. Married women spend 7.5¡¾3.0hrs to work.
6. The top women athletes average menstrual cycle is 29.3¡¾3.8 days compared to 29.3¡¾2.3, 30.4¡¾3.6, 29.7¡¾5.3 for phy. ed. majors, non phy. ed. majors and married women, respectively. The frequency of irregular menstruation for top women
athletes
is
21.4%, and for phy. ed. majors, non phy. ed. majors, married women are 16.5%, 18.0%, 19.2%, respectively.
7. The duration of menstruation for the athletes is 5.4¡¾1.5 days. phy. ed. majors, non phy. ed. majors and married women have 5.8¡¾1.6 days, 5.6¡¾1.3 days, 5.2¡¾1.7 days of menstruation., respectively.
8. The amount of menstruation was measured according to scanty, moderate and profuse amount. The amount for women athletes is 11.5%, 62.6%, 25.9%. The amount is 17.7%, 58.5%, 23.9%, respectively, for the sub-groups of the average women.
9. As a subjective criterion for the physical condition during menstruation 'Good' 'Average', 'Bad', or 'No effect' was used. The percentage for women athletes for the four criteria is 7.4%, 40.1%, 11.3%, respectively. For the average women it is
2.4%,
36.7%, 51.8%, 7.1%, respectively.
10. Of the top women athletes 11% used medicine or injections to lengthen menstruation. And of these women 85.0% were successful in lengthening menstruation but 38.0%experienced side effects such as edema, dizziness and vomiting.
11. Of the women athletes, 7.9% had serieus medical Problems and 10.5% had a history of operations.19.6% of average women had serious medical problems and 15.0% had a history of operations.
